A master capable of taking the fire to wherever he desires, or of extinguishing it whenever he wants to do so. And, since he has taught no one how to light the fire, he is likely to leave everyone in the darkness.” “When you strike out along your path, you will find a door with a phrase written upon it,” says the master. “Come back to me, and tell me what the phrase says.” The disciple gives himself to the search, body and soul, and one day comes upon the door, and then returns to his master. “What was written there was 'THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE,' he says.” “Was that written on a wall or on a door?” the master asks. “On a door,” the disciple answers. “Well, then, put your hand on the doorknob and open it.” The disciple obeyed. Since the phrase was painted with the door, it gave way just as the door itself did. With the door completely open, he could no longer see the phrase -and he went on. The master says: “Close your eyes. Or even with your eyes open, imagine the following scene: a flock of birds on the wing. Now, tell me how many birds you saw: Five? Eleven? Sixteen? Whatever the response -and it is difficult for someone to say how many birds were seen -one thing becomes quite clear in this small experiment. You can imagine a flock of birds, but the number of birds in the flock is beyond your control. Yet the scene was clear, well-defined, exact. There must be an answer to the question. Who was it that determined how many birds should appear in the imagined scene? Not you!” A man decided to visit a hermit who, he had been told, lived not far from the monastery at Sceta. After wandering aimlessly about the desert, he finally found the monk. “I need to know what is the first step that should be taken along the spiritual path,” he said. The hermit took the man to a small well, and told him to look at his reflection in the water. The man tried to do so, but as he made his attempt, the hermit threw pebbles into the water, causing the surface to be disturbed. “I won't be able to see my face in the water if you keep throwing those pebbles,” said the man. “Just as it is impossible for a man to see his face in tro??6t? ?TI have been thinking about how to make this news less difficult to hear -how to paint it in brighter colors, add to it promises of Paradise, visions of the Absolute, provide esoteric explanations -but they do not apply. Take a deep breath, and prepare yourself. I have to be blunt, and I assure you, I am absolutely certain of what I'm telling you. It is an infallible prediction, without any doubt whatsoever. It's the following: you are going to die. It may be tomorrow or fifty years from now, but -sooner or later --you are going to die. Even if you would rather not. Even if you have other plans. Think carefully about what you are going to do today. And tomorrow. And with the rest of your life.” An explorer, a white man, anxious to reach his destination in the heart of Africa , promised an extra payment to his bearers if they would make greater speed. For several days, the bearers moved along at a faster pace. One afternoon, though, they all suddenly put down their burden and sat on the ground. No matter how much money they were offered, they refused to move on. When the explorer finally asked why they were behaving as they were, he was given the following answer: “We have been moving along at such a fast pace that we no longer know what we are doing. Now we have to wait until our soul catches up with us.” Our Lady, with the infant Jesus in her arms, came down to earth to visit a monastery. In their joy, the padres stood in line to pay their respects: one of them recited poetry, another showed Her illuminated images for the Bible, another recited the names of all of the saints. At the end of the line was a humble padre who had never had the chance to learn from the wise men of his time. His parents were simple people who worked in a traveling circus. When his turn came, the monks wanted to end the payment of respects, fearful that he would damage their image. But he, too, wanted to show his love for the Virgin. Embarrassed, and sensing the disapproval of the brothers, he took some oranges from his pocket and began to toss them in the air -juggling as his parents with the circus had taught him. It was only then that the infant Jesus smiled and clapped his hands with joy. And it was only to the humble monk that the Virgin held out her arms, allowing him to hold her Son for a while. Do not always try to be consistent. Saint Paul, after all, said, “The wisdom of the world is madness in the eyes of God.” To be consistent is always to wear a tie that matches one's socks. It is to have the same opinions tomorrow as one has today. And the movement of the planet? Where is it? So long as you do no harm to another, change your opinion once in a while. Contradict yourself without being embarrassed. This is your right. It doesn't matter what others think -because that's what they will think, in any case. So, relax. Let the universe move about. Discover the joy of surprising yourself. “God selected the crazy things on the earth so as to embarrass the wise men,” saidSaint Paul . The master says: “Today would be a good day for doing something out of the ordinary. We could, for example, dance through the streets on our way to work. Look directly into the eyes of a stranger, and speak of love at first sight. Give the boss an idea that may seem ridiculous, an idea we've never mentioned before. The Warriors of the Light allow themselves such days. Today, we could cry over some ancient injustices that still stick in our craw. We could phone someone we vowed never to speak to again (but from whom we would love to receive a message on the answering machine). Today could be considered a day outside the script that we write every morning. Today, any fault will be permitted and forgiven. Today is a day to enjoy life.” The scientist, Roger Penrose, was walking with some friends and talking animatedly. He fell silent only in order to cross the street. “I remember that -as I was crossing the street -an incredible idea came to me,” Penrose said. “But, as soon as we reached the other side, we picked up where we left off, and I couldn't remember what I thought of just a few seconds earlier.” Late in the afternoon, Penrose began to feel euphoric -without knowing why. “I had the feeling that something had been revealed to me,” he said. He decided to go back over every minute of the day, and -when he remembered the moment when he was crossing the street -the idea came back to him. This time, he wrote it down. It was the theory of black holes, a revolutionary theory in modern physics. And it came back to him because Penrose was able to recall the silence that we always fall into as we cross a street. Saint Anton was living in the desert when a young man approached him. “Father, I sold everything I owned, and gave the proceeds to the poor. I kept only a few things that could help me to survive out here. I would like you to show me the path to salvation.” Saint Anton asked that the lad sell the few things that he had kept, and -with the money -buy some meat in the city. When he returned, he was to strap the meat to his body. The young man did as he was instructed. As he was returning, he was attacked by dogs and falcons who wanted the meat. “I'm back,” said the young man, showing the father his wounded body and his tattered clothing. “Those who embark in a new direction and want to keep a bit of the old life, wind up lacerated by their own past,” said the saint. The master says: “Make use of every blessing that God gave you today. A blessing cannot be saved. There is no bank where we can deposit blessings received, to use them when we see fit. If you do not use them, they will be irretrievably lost. God knows that we are creative artists when it comes to our lives. On one day, he gives us clay for sculpting, on another, brushes and canvas, or a pen. But we can never use clay on our canvas, nor pens in sculpture. Each day has its own miracle. Accept the blessings, work, and create your minor works of art today. Tomorrow you will receive others.” The monastery on the bank of the Rio Piedra is surrounded by beautiful vegetation -it is a true oasis within the sterile fields of that part of Spain

As the 2024 games end with a spectacular closing ceremony, we take a look back on the two-week sports spectacularhe Paris Olympics 2024 has come to an end with a spectacular closing ceremony in the Stade de France celebrating the athletes and their feats over the two-week event. The ceremony also offered a glimpse of what could be in store in 2028 when Los Angeles will play host. From one day to the next, the whole of France became Olympic’ Paris brought down the curtain on an Olympic Games that brought scintillating sport to the heart of the French capital, breathing new life into an Olympic brand hurt by the difficulties of Rio de Janeiro’s 2016 Games and Tokyo’s COVID-hit event. Even Parisians were carried away by the Olympic fervour. “We wanted to dream. We got Leon Marchand,” Paris 2024 chief Tony Estanguet told the crowd, referring to the French swimmer who took home four golds and won a legion of new fans. “Together, we lived the games as never seen before, a whale even took part in the the surfing finals in Haiti. From one day to the next, time stopped and a whole country vibrated,” Estanguet said. “France rediscovered itself. From one day to the next, the whole of France became Olympic,” he added. He also mentioned that the Olympic Games saw “the most marriage proposals ever”. Paris promised “light at the end of the tunnel” and a more carefree games. But Russia’s war in Ukraine on Europe’s eastern flank, Israel’s war on Gaza, and France’s heightened state of alert over security loomed large as the games finally got under way. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach saluted the athletes as he declared the Games closed. “You showed us what greatness human beings are capable of,” Bach said as he took to the stage. “You lived together, you embraced each other even though some countries are divided and at war. You lived in peace. As Paris wound up its games, the Olympic flag was officially handed over to Los Angeles, which will host the 2028 Olympics. On the stadium’s giant screens, Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, rapper Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre kept the party going in an prerecorded show from a California beach. In medals, the US team again topped the medal table, with 126 in all; 40 of them gold. China, also won 40 golds, but managed only 27 silvers. Still, it was the country’s best performance in an overseas Olympics since it began competing in 1984. Japan also turned in a strong performance after meeting their lofty goal of 20 gold medals and coming in third on the medals table.

Tropical Storm Ernesto is headed for Puerto Rico. Here’s where it could go next

Tropical Storm Ernesto has formed in the Atlantic and is racing toward the Caribbean and Puerto Rico with heavy rainfall, gusty winds and dangerous seas as a predicted hyperactive hurricane season ramps up. The center of the storm is located a few hundred miles east of the eastern Caribbean’s Leeward Islands Monday evening, the National Hurricane Center reported, with maximum winds around 40 mph. The storm was racing west-northwest at 28 mph, forecasters at the center said. The fast-moving system will bring tropical storm conditions – including potentially damaging winds and heavy rainfall – to the Leeward Islands late Monday or early Tuesday. Those conditions will spread across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Tuesday evening.Early track forecasts suggest Ernesto will not follow Debby’s continental US-bound path, and will instead curve north and intensify into a hurricane over very warm ocean water, potentially placing Bermuda in harm’s way, instead.Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands – an island chain in the northeast Caribbean including the US and British Virgin Islands. These warnings mean tropical storm conditions are coming soon. Tropical storms have sustained winds up to 73 mph with stronger gusts and are capable of damaging some structures and taking down trees and power lines. Additional watches and warnings could be be issued in the coming days. Drenching rainfall looks to be the most significant threat over parts of the eastern and northern Caribbean this week. The rain will begin by late Monday for some. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches will be widespread, with up to 10 inches possible in parts of Puerto Rico. “Heavy rainfall may result in locally considerable flash flooding and mudslides,” the National Hurricane Center warned Monday. Some of the heaviest rain could fall from late Monday through Wednesday over the Leeward Islands and later Tuesday into Thursday for Puerto Rico. Tropical storm-force winds will also pound areas within the system’s path from Tuesday onwards. These winds will create dangerous seas and up to 3 feet of storm surge for many islands in the region. The combination of rain and wind could cause issues for Puerto Rico’s vulnerable electrical infrastructure. A gradual turn to the north is expected to begin Wednesday, eventually pulling Ernesto away from the Caribbean and into the open Atlantic. Once over open water, Ernesto will strengthen and become a hurricane. How strong Ernesto gets will depend heavily on very warm ocean water and how potent storm-disrupting upper level winds become over the region. It’s possible Ernesto becomes a major hurricane – Category 3 strength or greater – late this week. But Ernesto’s track could shift depending on a number of factors, including when it is pulled northward. A later turn would mean the storm would impact areas farther west like Hispaniola or the southern Bahamas. Ernesto could be a powerful hurricane by the weekend as it approaches Bermuda. It’s too early to know exactly how close Ernesto will come to Bermuda and how much rain and wind it’ll bring. Ernesto’s will have wide-reaching impacts later this week and this weekend despite an uncertain final track somewhere over the open Atlantic. The storm will churn up seas hundreds of miles away and could create dangerous rip currents for the US East Coast, the Bahamas and parts of the Caribbean into early next week.

Tech titan Elon Musk threw open his X platform on Monday night, offering Donald Trump a pipeline free of fact checks for his falsehoods, conspiracy theories and extremism as he tries to slow the rise of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. The chat represented yet another extraordinary chapter in a presidential campaign that has defied logic with its stunning twists in recent weeks, including an assassination attempt against Trump and President Joe Biden’s ending of his reelection bid.he former president has been floundering – struggling to cope with the soaring start by the new Democratic nominee. At times, during their expansive chat, Musk seemed to be using the power of his profile and platform to coach Trump on how to mount a better argument against Harris. “She’s a believer in being radical left,” Trump said at one point of a Democratic foe who has erased his polling advantage in only three weeks as a candidate. And the former president, who attempted to overturn an election he lost, baselessly claimed that Biden had been illegally ousted to make way for Harris. “She hasn’t done an interview since this whole scam started, and say what you want, this was a coup. This was a coup of a president of the United States,” Trump fumed. Musk agreed with Trump that Harris was a radical leftist and flattered his guest by implying that he was strong and his Democratic opponents were weak. He referred to America’s enemies and said, “Do they fear the American president, or is it someone they do not respect and do not fear? Let’s look at the footage of the assassination. Like, okay, you know, President Trump is like, don’t mess with me.” Musk has already endorsed Trump, and he was leaving no doubt on Monday night that he wants to see him win a second term. “You are the path to prosperity. And I think Kamala is the opposite,” he told Trump. Musk, who has huge business interests in securing favorable treatment from the next administration, provided the Republican nominee an audience of at least 1.3 million concurrent listeners at the worst moment of his campaign so far. And he predicted at least 100 million people would consume the content in the coming days. Both Trump and Musk had lots to gain At times during the event, Trump — who spent months hammering Biden over his age, stutter and struggles to sometimes complete sentences — appeared to be lisping or slurring his words. It was not clear whether an audio issue was to blame. Asked for an explanation, the ex-president’s campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said: “Must be your hearing.” The chummy conversation between the tycoon and the former president also showed what each man had to gain. Musk was able to impress upon a possible future president, who is known for transactional leadership, his own views on immigration, the economy, curtailing government regulation and tax cuts. Musk’s companies, including SpaceX, a key player in the US space program, and Tesla, which makes electric vehicles, can be impacted by changes in government policy. The entire conversation was rife with potential conflicts of interest. No ordinary American would ever have a similar opportunity to have the ear of a possible future president. At one point, Musk even offered to take a position in the US government — perhaps as part of an efficiency commission to slash the administrative state. Trump said he’d “love it” if Musk got involved, noting the multi-billionaire is a great “cutter.” Trump gained plenty from his investment of more than two hours of his time. Musk didn’t challenge him on any of his lies and misrepresentations – for instance, his prediction that 60 million undocumented migrants would invade the United States if he lost in November. During the talk, Musk downplayed the threat from global warming while defending his pioneering electric vehicle empire. Trump, meanwhile, warned about the threat from “nuclear warming,” which he said posed a greater danger than “global warming.” It was not clear if he was trying to refer to nuclear power – which Musk argued was “not as scary as people think.” The encounter was a powerful example of the way that presidential politics has been transformed by social media and the splintering of traditional journalism. Trump may not have been president without Twitter, as his emergence as a political force in 2016 coincided with the site’s heyday. His skills at exploiting the new medium like no other politician made that year’s presidential election a unique combination of a man and his moment. Eight years on, under the leadership of Musk, who preaches unfettered free speech, X has dismantled many of the safeguards against the propagation of falsehoods and conspiracy theories on the site. It is, therefore, a perfect venue for the ex-president to escape the constraints of traditional media and to spin his web of alternative reality — which is hugely popular among his millions of supporters. Republicans are complaining about what they say is flattering media coverage of the nascent Harris run. But few candidates have had an easier ride than the Republican nominee got on X on Monday night. In a sign of the international political questions raised by the evolution of X, a European commissioner, Thierry Breton, wrote to Musk to warn him that he must prevent the “amplification of harmful content,” which could be accessed by consumers inside the bloc. Cheung warned on X that the EU should “mind their own business instead of trying to meddle in the US Presidential election,” in an exchange that appeared to auger poorly for already testy relations between the Trump team and Musk and Europe. After years avoiding Twitter and X, Trump had gushing praise for Musk Trump spooled out countless falsehoods and exaggerations on Monday night, including over the numbers of migrants who crossed the border, the extent of the inflation crisis that has now cooled, his legal troubles, the current administration’s energy policy and his familiar claim that foreign nations were dumping their prisoners across the southern US border. There is no doubt that many of Trump’s voters, listening in or hearing highlights of the conversation in the coming days, will agree with what much of the former president said in a way that underscores his political viability even after Harris transformed the race. At points, Trump did make a more coherent and focused argument for a second term than he has in recent days, when he has appeared to be discombobulated by the shift in a race he believed he was primed to win against Biden. He and Musk accused the current president and the vice president of adopting spending policies that fueled the inflation that has been painful for millions of Americans. But Trump’s constant meanderings and amplification of conspiracy theories also demonstrated why many voters disdain him and why there are questions about his appeal to suburban and women voters in battleground states. Early on, it seemed as though the session would become a fresh metaphor for Trump’s misfires, as it was delayed by technical glitches. Musk claimed that a distributed denial-of-service attack was to blame, although it was not possible to immediately confirm that bad actors had been responsible. “There is a lot of opposition to people just hearing what President Trump has to say,” Musk said. The Harris campaign was quick to respond, posting a Trump Truth Social post from last year that lambasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over the troubled start to his primary campaign in a glitchy Twitter Spaces event with Musk. The event marked Trump’s return to X, formerly known as Twitter, from which he was banned by the site’s previous owners after the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol by his mob. His account was restored by Musk. Anyone who listened to the full two-hour conversation would have learned more about Musk’s evolving political views – and his growing willingness to use his power and wealth to express them – than anything fresh about Trump. But the ex-president was gushingly grateful for a new friend in a time of political need. “You’re an amazing guy, you’ve done an incredible job. You are a great inspiration to people,” Trump said before saying goodbye.
