The 11 cheapest UK towns and cities for university students - based on rent, transport, grocery costs and more

For many students attending university will be their first time living outside the family home, and managing their own finances. On top of that almost everyone is feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis, which is having a huge impact on things like rent and grocery prices. With secondary school finishers last week wrapping up their A-Level exams, many will now be looking towards heading off to university in Autumn. And with dozens of universities and campuses where you can study towards your degree spread right across the UK, there are options aplenty - including many cities where it will be much more affordable to be a student than the likes of London. To help students navigate the financial landscape, researchers from student furniture supplier Deskup have looked into which are the most and least affordable UK cities for students to live in. They have calculated results from 100 towns and cities right across the UK’s four countries, based on 13 different factors assigned different weights. These include monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the CBD (13%); the price of a monthly public transport pass (13%); internet (13%); monthly grocery average (13%); electricity, heating, water and rubbish bills for a 915 square-foot apartment (13%); average monthly coffee cost (9%); the cost of two McDonalds’ meals a week per month (8%); a four-pack of domestic beer every weekend per month (5%); a monthly fitness pass (5%); the number of parks in each city (2%); the cost of one cinema ticket per month (2%); city tours under £20 (2%); and the cost of coworking spaces (2%). Using the data - collected from Numbeo, Tripadvisor, and Coworker - they then calculated ‘affordability scores’ for each city. Perhaps unsurprisingly, London had the lowest score by quite a large margin at just 34.14. Oxford was not much in 97th place, while Edinburgh sat at 91st; Cambridge at 90th; Manchester at 86th; Bristol at 72nd; Sheffield at 67th, and Cardiff at 48th. But which cities and towns worked out the most affordable for students? Here’s what they found:

Ethiopian state-owned operator Ethio Telecom announced revenues and profits surged over 20% in its full year ending in June. Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru (pictured) said in a news conference revenue grew 22% to ETB93.7 billion (US$1.63 billion), and net profit increased 21% to ETB21.79 billion, Reuters reported. Total subscribers rose 9% to 78.3 million and subscribers to mobile money platform Telebirr grew from 34.3 million to 47.55 million. Ethiopia announced plans to float 10% of shares in Ethio Telecom in February but the plan has yet to attract a buyer. Prior to that the government mulled putting 45% of shares on the market, a move to remain competitive against incoming rivalry at the time from Safaricom. Orange revealed itself as a candidate for the shares but pulled out as it was seeking over 50%. Orange Middle East and Africa CEO Jerome Henique explained to Developing Telecoms at MWC Barcelona a partial stake would not enable Orange to deploy its operating model in Ethiopia. The chief executive has left the door open to a potential future deal. Ethiopia is seen as one of the last bastions of growth for the telecoms sector with its large 100 million population. The government opened its economy to international businesses in 2018, paving the way for Safaricom to mount its challenge against Ethio Telecom.

Kitaw was born in Bonga, Keffa province, Ethiopia on 25 February from his father Ejigu Haile and mother Askale Belayneh. He went to Jimma’s Miazia 27th High School. After completing his primary and secondary education in Bonga, Waka and Jimma, Kitaw attended his higher education at the Polytechnic College of Ethiopia, in Bahir Dar in the department of Mechanical engineering and in 1966 he graduated as the top student in his class. In 1967, after his graduation from the former Polytechnic College, now Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Kitaw became Chief technical advisor and assistant manager for Ethiopian Automotive Services and Sales Company and served for two years. Following his scholarship to United States, Kitaw had an opportunity to be employed in NASA and became the first Ethiopian aerospace scientist. Kitaw served in NASA as Chief of Spacecraft and Satellite Systems engineer and invented spacecraft and rockets to support Planetary Science Research and Exploration. In 1978, Kitaw invented two aerospace mechanisms, which were patented under NASA's new technologies program, while working with NASA's other scientists and Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin, second person to walk on the Moon. Also he invented Flight Dynamic Simulator and Advanced Global Positioning Satellite System for Boeing with his co-workers, and worked as a Space Technology and System Research scientist for this company. Later, Kitaw also worked as a scientist and engineer for Loral Corp and Rockwell International. In the 2000s, he went to his homeland Ethiopia and did his best to introduce technology-based development. Kitaw established a privately owned satellite and related systems engineering company that he called Trans Tech International, a global technologies service systems. Also he served as its Chief executive officer until his death on 12 January 2006. Kitaw invented spacecraft and rockets to support Planetary Science Research and Exploration. He was also among scientists who invented Flight Dynamic Simulator, Advanced Global Positioning Satellite System, and Aerospace Rocket mechanics. Before his journey to the United States, he worked as Chief technical advisor and assistant manager for Ethiopian Automotive Services and Sales Company.He was the first Aerospace scientist. Kitaw died on 13 January 2006 after having a stroke on 8 January 2006.
